The Project

Open Works is one of the nation’s largest non-profit makerspaces. It provides workforce development, training, and educational programs for people of all ages and backgrounds, and is an incubator for craftspeople and small businesses.

Open Works website users, ranging from new visitors looking for classes to resident members reserving machinery to employees fielding complaints, shared a common frustration. Information was too difficult to locate online and act upon.

Results

The project leveraged user data from surveys, interviews, and website analytics to devise a persona-driven strategy for the new website. This strategy concentrated on:

  • Improving navigation to encourage greater engagement on key pages and

  • Adopting self-service options to ensure that users from ages 12 to 80 reached the information they needed more quickly.

A library of resources now offers in-depth guides and perspectives on a range of subjects as well as content to use in marketing and fundraising efforts to increase donations and membership to serve more people in the community.
